Spanish Federation Suspends Planned Strike

A Spanish court has suspended the players’ strike in La Liga and matches will go ahead this weekend as planned.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) had had decided to suspend the end of the domestic season due to a dispute over TV rights revenue and had been supported by the players' union, AFE, which decided to go on strike.

Going up against these two bodies is the Spanish league (LFP), which is supportive of government proposals to ensure a more equitable distribution of TV income along the lines of the English collective bargaining model, which would have impacted on Real Madrid and Barcelona's duopoly.

And the LFP argued in a court hearing on Wednesday that the strike would cause economic damage that "would be impossible to repair", according to lawyer Javier Suarez.

The court has sided with the LFP and has ordered the industrial action by players to be suspended, allowing matches to take place.

The RFEF said in a statement: "Taking into account the order made by the High Court on this day, the Spanish Football Federation proceeds to lift the measure agreed on May 6, 2015, providing that the competitions are played according to the schedule and times originally planned.
