Tiwa Savage’s ‘Dress Sense’

Honestly, Tiwa Savage is good at what she does. As an actress, model and musician, her introduction into the Nigerian music industry gave female musicians hope that they could compete favourably with the men as pop stars.  Writing as someone who has seen Savage perform on stage, I still haven’t seen any Nigerian female musician who can match her energy on stage. Yes, her voice is a strong selling point. Any female musician who wants to make it as a pop star in this country should use Savage’s career as a blue-print.

Besides the admiration and attention Savage gets as a musician, her sense of fashion often irks her fans.  Whether it’s the body suit she wore in her Wanted video (the video itself is a story for another day) or the see-through dress she wore to this year’s edition of the BET Awards show, anytime she steps out, her dressing always attracts some form of attention.
Anyone who has followed her career will also notice that Savage has become a lot liberal with her fashion choices. Also, she has almost single-handedly brought ‘sexy’ back to Nigerian show-business. If she releases a video today, be sure that you will see a lot of skin from either Savage or her dancers.  Resultantly, many have labelled her “the Nigerian Beyonce”, “a Beyonce wannabe” or a “bad copy of Nicki Minaj”.
But the singer has not taken it lying down. She also has a few words to say in her defence on Twitter.  “[I‘m] going to speak my mind this morning. People only wanna see fault in others. No one speaks when I wear dresses. Why do you people only focus on certain outfits? No one talks when I wear gowns. People only wanna dwell on negatives. Haters wanna make out like I only wear pants. Get a life. Truth is, most haters do worse things behind closed doors. It’s unfortunate [that] the criticism is not valid. If I was always unclad, then fine; but, truth is, most times, I am not.”
Considering the above, it is obvious that Savage doesn’t give a hoot what anybody thinks about her dress sense. One thing is a given; sex sure sells, be it overseas or in Nigeria and we are sure Mrs Billz is smiling to the bank!
